What NSM stores, why, and your rights under UK data protection law.

What we store

Calls

Voice and video calls go directly between devices where possible. When a direct connection isn't possible, they pass through Cloudflare's encrypted relay. Calls are never recorded.

Keeping NSM safe

NSM automatically checks messages for words linked to serious harm or illegal activity (for example child abuse, drug dealing, weapons, threats or fraud). If a message matches, or someone reports it, a copy of that message and the sender's account details are shared with NSM moderators. Moderators may remove messages, suspend accounts and, where the law requires or someone may be at risk, pass information to the police or child-protection bodies. Nothing else in your conversations is read.

Who processes your data

We don't sell your data and NSM has no ads.

E-mails

We only send news and updates if you ticked “E-mail me NSM news” when signing up. You can change your mind at any time. Account e-mails, such as password resets, are always sent.

How long we keep it

We keep your data while your account exists. Flagged messages are kept as long as needed to deal with the report.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself at any time: on PC use Help ▸ Delete My Account, on your phone tap ⋮ ▸ Delete my account, or use the delete your account page. It happens straight away and removes your profile, display picture, every message you've sent, your contacts and settings, your username and friend code, your login, and your e-mail, full name and date of birth. Messages your friends sent you stay in their chat history. Reports of flagged messages and suspensions are kept until they've been dealt with, so deleting an account can't be used to avoid moderation.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how it's used. Contact [email protected]. If you're unhappy with our response, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Children

NSM is for people aged 13 and over. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, contact us and we'll remove it.
